Newsletter — July 2008
The summer months of July and August are always a fairly quiet time in the chaplaincy, with many people away for all or part of the time, so there is not a great deal of news this month.
Summer service times
In the past, in view of the high temperatures in the middle of the day, we have brought forward the starting time of the Sunday service at St George’s Church for the months of July and August. This year, however, since our Chaplain has to be in two places on a Sunday morning, we are keeping the service at 12.00 noon. After the service we will continue to serve coffee and cold drinks, and to provide shade from the midday sun these are now being served under a very smart ‘garden pavilion’, kindly sold to us by one of our members for a bargain price!
The services at Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and in Competa Parish Church continue to be held at 9.30 a.m. and at 5.30 p.m. respectively.
“Church of St Barnabas”
Those of you who read the previous edition of this newsletter will know that the breakaway group led by the Revd. James Taylor, formerly Assistant Curate in the chaplaincy, set themselves up a few months ago as a rival and independent congregation meeting not far from Lux Mundi in Torre del Mar. They recently claimed that they were shortly to be accepted into the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church. This is clearly untrue, as a joint letter sent by Bishop David, our Suffragan Bishop, and Bishop Carlos of the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church makes clear. Click here to read this letter.
Friday 15 August: Malaga Feria — food and fireworks!
Every August the 9-day long Malaga Feria begins with a spectacular firework display starting at midnight. The roof of the building in Paseo de Reding that houses the Chaplaincy Flat provides an excellent vantage point from which to watch the fireworks, and Peter and Elaine are inviting anyone that wishes to go to join them up there on this occasion. This will be a fund-raising event for the chaplaincy, and for €10 per person we are invited, from 10.00 pm onwards on 15 August, to partake of cava and desert in their flat and then, shortly before midnight, to go up to the roof to see the fireworks. Please note the date in your diary, and contact Rosella (95 240 0006 or events@stgeorgemalaga.org) for tickets.
Welcome to Sheila Mitchell
We offer a very warm welcome to a recent arrival in the Chaplaincy! The Revd. Sheila Mitchell moved with her husband from the UK to live full-time in Mondron near Periana - in a house that had previously been their holiday home - at the end of 2007, after her husband, Bob, had taken early retirement. For the previous 7 years she had been vicar of a country parish in the Chester Diocese with responsibility for two churches, during which time she was on the Chester Diocesan Synod. Sheila was ordained in 1996, having previously run a Christian charity providing drug education to schools in the Wirral. Before that she was a teacher.
The diocesan office is currently processing our application for Sheila to have Permission to Officiate in the Chaplaincy, and in the meantime she is helping the Chaplain at occasional services at Torre del Mar. We look forward to seeing Sheila at St George’s Church and in Competa before long.

That’s all for now. If you live in or are visiting the Malaga area we look forward to seeing you at St George’s Church or at one of our other congregations. If you are not sure of directions, please go to www.acny.org.uk, or phone 95 229 0173, or email webmaster@stgeorgemalaga.org.
